Dr. P. Jayasankar, Director
I am glad to inform you that on 12 January 2012 (Thursday) in the afternoon I have joined as Director, Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), Bhubaneswar. Starting my research pursuit from the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) at its Regional Centre in Mandapam Camp as Ph. D scholar (1983) and later as Scientist (1986), I have continued the sojourn, later to join as Head, Fish Genetics and Biotechnology Division at CIFA on 2 January 2008. Acting as Director, CIFA from 3 June 2011 my journey reached at a very important turning point on 12 January 2012. I am fully aware of the onus and responsibility vested upon me to take this great institution forward into the XII Five Year Plan period.
Infrastructure development, particularly in the farm sector, need-based and market-driven reorientation of research programmes giving thrust on FARMER FIRST concept, HRD with focus on enhancing work efficiency and improving work culture, manpower, particularly development of second line of researchers in many critical areas, strengthening linkages with national and international institutions with a view to achieving win-win situation, and optimal and effective utilization of allotted budget are some of my priorities.
I cannot help but mention about the recent visit of our most Honourable Secretary, DARE and Director General, ICAR, Dr S. Ayyappan to CIFA after a gap of two and half years. His half a day long presence was mesmerizing, enthralling and in his most inimitable style he has conveyed his most valuable suggestions for the total systemic improvement of CIFA. It was one of the most unforgettable moments of my life. I humbly request you also to provide us with your valuable support and guidance in our endeavour to make CIFA a centre of excellence in freshwater aquaculture.

The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture has over the years, contributed immensly to the development of aquaclture sector in the country. The institute has developed several need based, viable technologies, that are contributing to more than third of total fish production at present. Till today, the CIFA has generated 16 full proof freshwater aquaculture technology, which are under various stages of adoption. These technolgies covers a complete set of packages and practices from seed production, pond mangement to post harvest processing. With each passing year, the Institute is adding up to the basket of technologies to be offered to the farmer, rural youth, entrepruners etc.
