Ghani ZamanI was introduced to the magic of photography at a very early age by my father and later by my brother in law. What started as a hobby in the 60's became a passion by the 80's and in 1985, I took it up as a full-time profession with help from Mr. & Mrs.Ray Bakke of Chicago, USA.

To fine tune my skills I joined Chitrabani, a reputed institute of Mass Communications at Calcutta. I was also lucky enough to learn from Mr.Garry Mason, former teacher of Photography, State University of Kansas, as well as personal photographer to Ronald Reagan, former president of the USA, when he was in India doing a series on Mother Teresa for Kodak.

Work Experience:

  • Photographer and Dev. Asst. with CASA (Churches Auxiliary for Social Action)
  • Area Coordinator with World Vision of India, where I used photographs to enhance my reports on Childcare and Community Development.
  • Freelance photographer with - The Statesman at Calcutta, The Independent (Bennet Colman Group) Calcutta office, Amrita Bazar Patrika, Times of India, Reuters and various Advertising Agencies in Bhubaneswar.
  • Photographer on contract with various organizations such as Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd., NTPC (Talcher Super Thermal Power Station), GRIDCO, Bhubaneswar, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, Jindal Steel and Power Ltd., CPSW (Council of Professional social workers), India Social Service Inc., USA etc.
  • Visiting Faculty on Photography at College of Engineering & Technology under Biju Patnaik University of Technology, Bhubaneswar.
  • Founding member, PhotoMission Inc., USA (Worldwide Community of Christian Photographers) (
  • Winner of the Millennium Photo contest in USA2000. (5000 photographers submitted photo documents of events that took place between 12 noon 31st Dec. 1999 till12 noon 1st Jan 2000. Total no. of photographs submitted – 2,50,000. Only 50 were judged the best. I was one of the fifty. My prizewinning photograph was displayed at O’Hara Airport, Chicago, USA for one year and later at Wall Street in New York, USA for one month. The photograph along with other winning photographs came out as a book – ‘The Dawn of the new Millennium’ – Cost 40 US$
